Ceramic Crowns

Crowns, also referred to as caps, are custom made to fit over your whole tooth after the cosmetic dentist has prepared it. They are usually made out of acrylic or porcelain that has been fused to metal to withstand biting pressure. Crowns can be used in cosmetic dentistry to treat teeth that are poorly shaped, badly decayed, broken, chipped, or have had large fillings, or to cover spaces in between teeth.

Ceramic crowns are much better than the crowns with porcelain stuck to metal.  This full porcelain crown is the best choice in these modern times.

Crown Preparation :

The process may be different for each type of dental crown, too. In general, getting a crown involves:

  • Your dentist will prepare your tooth, which can involve just the removal of decay, a root canal, or both.
  • S/he takes a mold so that the crown fits the exact shape of your tooth.
  • A temporary restoration is used to protect the tooth until the crown is ready. You should take special care of this temporary cap and avoid eating hard or sticky foods to prevent it from cracking.
  • After about a week, your dentist will have the crown ready.

In these cases ceramic crowns is often the best way to save a tooth and strengthen it. A crown fits over the existing natural tooth and replaces the natural crown, the part of the tooth that is seen above the gums.

Teeth can wear down over time because of grinding and then a crown to strengthen is needed.

Tooth decay weakens teeth severely sometimes. There can be a high risk that the tooth may fall apart. Also root canal treatment, where the pulp of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels is removed, can also weaken a tooth, especially if it has a large filling.

Why it is a good idea to get ceramic crowns?

Dental crowns serve a dual purpose. They improve the overall aesthetic of the teeth and protect underlying teeth from exposure to stress, heat, cold, acid, sugar and harmful bacteria.

Crowns can also last for years and even decades, more so if they are made from durable materials like porcelain or porcelain with metal coping. They have many restorative and cosmetic applications, like:

  • Replacement of missing teeth
  • Anchors or abutments for dental bridges
  • Filling gaps, covering slightly crooked teeth and being part of a treatment plan to treat slightly crowded teeth

Can I eat after cosmetic crown are fitted?

Yes. There are no special dietary precautions necessary when permanent crowns are fitted. Because they are cemented over existing teeth, normal care must be taken to avoid food and drink which will cause tooth decay.

Do wait 2-3 hours after the injection is given before eating.  You need the anesthetic to wear off.

How long does a ceramic crown last?

Properly cared for crowns should last for many years. Your dentist will be able to tell you how long the crown may be expected to last.

How do ceramic crowns help me?

There are several different problems that a crown can correct.

Some of the most common reasons are:

  • Strengthen a weak or fractured tooth
  • Replace a tooth after a root canal
  • Attaching an implant
  • Cosmetic purposes
  • Replace a filling that is too large for the remaining tooth

Some of these problems need immediate dental work, but others use a crown as a prevention of further problems down the road. We never advise getting a crown unless we feel like it is absolutely necessary.
